Advanced Organic Gardening

Don’t miss your chance to learn the fundamentals of organic gardening with Kelly Lockamy, one of Savannah’s best known advocates of sustainable living. Each four-hour session of the course will include time spent practicing what we learn in the classroom out in the real world of the garden of Skidaway Farms as well as classroom time (Skidaway Island United Methodist Church).

 

SOIL BIOLOGY & MANAGEMENT:

Physical Properties of Soil, Soil Biology and Ecosystems, Management of Soil Components, Tillage and Cultivation. Soil Applications: Site Selection and Design for Efficiency and Beauty, Preparing the Bed, Soil Amendments and Sources.

 

PLANTS:

Basics of Plant Anatomy and Physiology, Plant/Soil Relationships, Plant Varieties and Selection. Plant Applications: Seeds and Seed Starting Techniques, Propagation.

 

CROP MANAGEMENT:

Pest Control, Disease Control, Weed Control, Companion Planting. Application: Insect & Disease Identification in the Garden.

 

COMPOSTING:

Biological Processes of Composting, Materials, Composting Management, Using Compost. Application: Build and Begin Layering in Compost Bin; Construct a Worm Compost Container.
