Our Top Accomplishments of 2011

To plan for 2012, we recently did a quick inventory of our 2011 achievements. We can in no way take credit for all of these successes. Our members, farmers, partners, and friends help in untold ways

Farm to School

  • 272,000 local meals were served in six Georgia School Districts
  • Participated in meetings and events with 2 First Ladies (Michele Obama and Sandra Deal)
  • In 2011, 2,101 people attended 35 different Farm to School events (including teacher, parent, and nutrition staff trainings)
  • Helped start APS Parents Coalition

 

Advocacy

  • Worked with the city of Atlanta to help negotiate the passage of the city’s first regulations that explicitly recognize and nurture farmers markets
  • Hosted the state’s first-ever Farm to School Day at the Capitol
  • Spurred the passage of resolutions recognizing the importance of farm to school in both the state House and state Senate

 

General Coolness

  • Hosted our 14th annual conference in Savannah, with 1,100 in attendance
  • Membership is up to 1,180 (as of end of the year) with a yearly peak of 1,290
  • We have 265 farm members
  • Printed 60,000, Local Food Guides, the largest ever, with a total of 385 listings
  • Media hits up were up 20% over 2010
  • Completed the build out of our brand new website, which as received 48,915 unique visitors since March, 2011
  • The For Farmers resources section alone has 23 pages had 5,585 unique visitors
  • The Atlanta Local Food Initiative coalition broadened from 30 members to 50, and sold 3,091 plants at the annual Fruit Tree sale.
  • Gov. Nathan Deal officially recognized Oct. 24 as Food Day across the state of Georgia
  • Wholesome Wave Georgia enabled over $100,000 worth of fresh food purchases for EBT participants, and grew from 8 to 14 markets 
     

Farmer Services

  • Managed 17 farms and individuals participating in our Farmer to Farmer Mentoring Program
  • Our Urban Agriculture training program includes 11 trainees, with an average age of 32
  • Our Fall Farm Supply enabled 27 farmers to order bulk products at wholesale prices
  • Participated in the kick off of the Georgia Sustainable Agriculture Consortium to encourage Food Hubs
