| Description | Farmland preservation and access are among the most challenging issues facing the future of farming. Development and growth pressures place a premium on land prices making subdividing and selling lucrative to farmers nearing retirement age; the average age of farmers in Georgia is 57 and increasing. Meanwhile, land access remains the single most significant barrier to entry for future farmers who weren’t born into a farming family.
This workshop will present creative approaches to farm succession and access that are being employed across the country. Kathy Ruhf, a nationally recognized expert on farm entry, succession, and tenure anchors the one-day workshop intended for current farmers who would like to see their land remain in production as well as young farmers who are looking for ideas on how to find land that they can farm. Ms. Ruhf is co-director of Land For Good, a nonprofit organization that specializes in working land access and farm transfer planning.
Workshop also includes a tour of Love is Love Farm, and a discussion with filmmaker and young farmer Severine Fleming of The Greenhorns.
