ORGANIC FARMING

Organic farming is a holistic agricultural approach to growing foods and fibers sustainably. Organic farmers work in harmony with nature to build healthy, fertile soil and a naturally balanced eco-system. All kinds of agricultural products are now produced organically including vegetables, fruits, grains, meat, dairy, eggs, cotton and flowers. Organic agriculture uses techniques such as crop rotations, the recycling of farm-produced organic materials, cover crops and non-chemical methods for the control of pests, diseases and weeds. Synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, growth regulators and livestock feed additives are eliminated in organic farming.

Increased consumer awareness of food safety issues and environmental concerns has contributed to the growth in organic farming over the last few years. Today, there are more than 4 million acres of organic farms in the United States. Georgia only has 1,700 acres in organic production. This relatively small supply in the face of growing demand presents exceptional opportunities for new farmers and transitioning farmers who want to explore sustainable growing.
